WINNERS OF THE INTERNATIONAL ANTI-CORRUPTION EXCELLENCE AWARD

Mr Jose Ugaz was president of Transparency International Peru from 2002-2014, and Chair of the Board of Transparency International from 2014-2017.  He has served as ad-hoc State Attorney of Peru in several corruption cases, notably the Fujimori-Montesinos case in which 200 separate cases against 1500 members of the Fujimori crime network were opened by his office.

Prof. Ph.D. Sunčana Roksandić is an associate professor at the Department of Criminal Law, Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb. Her work focuses on the study of organized crime and corruption. She is the winner of the annual award of the Society of University Teachers and Scientists of the University of Zagreb for the best young scientist in the field of social sciences, and the Certificate of Appreciation of the Center for Forensic Examinations, Research and Expertise for an exceptional contribution to scientific cooperation aimed at combating crime in 2023.

Dr Jon Quah has been working in the field of anti-corruption since 1977. He is the author of Curbing Corruption in Asia: A comparative Study of Six Countries. His recommendations for an effective, two-prong approach to anti-corruption (a single completely independent anti-corruption agency, and political will to fight corruption) are taught extensively across the world.

All4Integrity is an anti-corruption organization in Portugal which has created the first ever Anti-Corruption Literacy in Schools program (REDEscuela) for grades 7-12. This program is offered in Portugal, Ireland, China, Mozambique and soon in the US, Brazil, Chile, and Argentina. The Portuguese ministry of education and the anticorruption national authority are incorporating this program’s data into national curricula. They also organize and deliver the Premio Tagides, an anti-corruption award in Portugal supported by the Office of the President, which seeks to publicise the fight against corruption and educate the population, and the Tech4Integrity program to promote open data, transparency dashboards and advanced anti-corruption Artificial Intelligence tools.

Damaris Aswa is the founder of Youth4Integrity, an NGO that aims to bring young people together to amplify their voice against corruption, and provides individuals and communities with the necessary tools to uphold integrity, democracy, and social justice in their communities. After completing Community Integrity Building training with Integrity Action, she was nominated as project officer and then manager of Students Acting for Honesty Integrity and Equality (SHINE).

Clare Rewcastle-Brown is one of the primary investigators who uncovered the 1MDB scandal in Malaysia. The evidence she uncovered led to the prosecution of former prime minister Najib Razak and his accomplices. Her other investigations include the Sarawak Report website, an investigation into how corruption is enabling the destruction of the Borneo jungle. She has also investigated a Venezuelan billionaire who made payments to the Conservative Party in the UK, disclosing the links between him and the then-Prime Minister Liz Truss’ Chief of Staff.

Phil Mason was a UK Civil Servant for 35 years, where he spearheaded the anti-corruption work of the Department for International Development (DfID). He was one of the first anti-corruption experts to highlight the importance of anti-corruption measures on the supply side of international aid as well as measures in the recipient country. Under his guidance, DfID established aid-funded UK law enforcement units to investigate and recover stolen assets in the UK originating from developing countries, as well as to pursue bribery by British companies in developing countries.

Waihiga Mwaura began his career as an investigative reporter related to sports, after which he moved to investigations related to public service and governance. He is the recipient of the 2021 Media Council Investigative Journalism award, 2018 BBC Komla Dumor award and 2015 Mo Amin Award. In 2021, his investigative work contributed to the conviction of Kenyan Sports Minister for corruption and mismanagement within his ministry.

Shantanu Guha Ray is an Indian investigative journalist whose work has resulted some of India’s most public exposés. He uncovered and publicised massive corruption in the Indian Cricket Board related to spot fixing and match fixing in domestic and international cricket. He also wrote a book on this topic, Fixed: Cash and Corruption in Cricket. His other investigations into blood diamonds uncovered corruption in the labelling and export of these diamonds from the ‘killing field’ mines of Angola and Botswana to the dealers in India.
